Last Thursday 22nd February, the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Belgium and Luxembourg held a new luncheon-debate in the framework of its \u201cBusiness Circle\u201d tribune, in which Jaume Duch Guillot, Director General of Communication and Spokesperson in the European Parliament, spoke about \u201cEuropean Elections 2024: challenges and opportunities for the next five years\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The President of the Chamber, Pablo L\u00f3pez-\u00c1lvarez, opened the event highlighting the professional career of the speaker and the relevance of the next European elections that will take place from 6th to 9th of June and that will be \u201cperhaps the most important in history\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jaume Duch then began his speech by contextualising the year 2024 as one in which two major elections will take place that \u201cwill shape our near future\u201d: the European elections and the US elections that will take place on November 4th. \u201cThe combined effect of both elections will affect our lives more in the coming years than any national or local election,\u201d Duch said.<\/span><\/p>\n

A context of crisis<\/b><\/h5>\n

This key moment comes after a \u201cturbulent\u201d mandate, marked by crises such as the climate emergency, the inflation crisis and the covid pandemic, a health crisis with which \u201cwe discovered the limits of globalisation\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this volatile context, \u201cthe European Union needs to function as a global player with a certain degree of self-sufficiency if we want to remain a relevant geopolitical actor\u201d. In this sense, Duch pointed out several of the challenges that the Union will have to respond to in the next legislature, such as the Green Deal, the reinforcement of social policies and the culmination of the capital markets union.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPolls show that European citizens perceive the positive impact of the EU\u2019s response to crises that affect their lives,\u201d he said, adding that \u201csix out of ten have a good opinion\u201d of the EU. Even so, Duch explained that it will be vitally important to get the message across to the European public that voting is the best way to protect democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of the speech, there was a round of Q&A in which the role of the capital markets union in the election campaign and the question of how to protect the EU\u2019s credibility were raised.<\/span><\/p>\n
